Quick Answer

  • Fresh concrete looks finished long before it is finished — it keeps gaining strength for weeks, and the first days matter most.
  • Foot traffic after 24–48 hours, vehicles after about 7 days, full strength near 28 days.
  • Skip de-icing salt the first winter; use sand for traction. Questions? Call 630-595-1518.

The First 24–48 Hours

Stay off the slab until it is ready for light foot traffic, usually 24 to 48 hours. Keep children, pets, bikes, and lawn equipment off it, and do not hose or wash the surface unless we have told you to — some curing methods rely on holding moisture in.

The First Week (Before Vehicles)

Keep cars off a new driveway for about 7 days, and hold off longer on heavy trucks, trailers, RVs, and dumpsters. Concrete continues to harden well past the point where it looks dry, so a little patience here protects the slab for decades.

Your First Winter — Skip the Salt

De-icing salt is the most common cause of surface scaling on young concrete. Avoid it entirely the first winter and use sand for traction instead. After that, keep de-icer use to a minimum and rinse residue off in spring.

Weather While It Cures

Concrete does not cure on a fixed clock. Hot, dry, or windy weather dries the surface fast, while cold weather slows strength gain. We adjust the pour timing and protection to the forecast — coverings or curing compound in the heat, blankets in the cold — so your slab cures properly.

Long-Term Care

Keep drainage paths clear so water sheds off and away. Rinse de-icer residue in spring, and reseal periodically — especially decorative, colored, or stamped finishes — to protect color and surface against moisture and freeze-thaw. We will tell you what your specific finish needs.

Frequently Asked Questions — New Concrete Care

When can I walk on my new concrete?

Light foot traffic is usually fine after 24 to 48 hours. Keep pets, bikes, and lawn equipment off it during that window so the surface can set cleanly.

When can I drive on it?

Wait about 7 days before parking passenger vehicles, and longer for heavy trucks, trailers, or dumpsters. Concrete keeps gaining strength and reaches full design strength near 28 days.

Can I use salt or de-icer on new concrete in Chicago winters?

Avoid de-icing salt the first winter — it is the most common cause of surface scaling on young concrete. Use sand for traction instead, and keep de-icer use to a minimum after that.

Do I need to water or cover it?

Only if we tell you to. We choose the right curing method for the weather and finish on your job, so just follow the care steps we leave with you and avoid disturbing any covering or sealer.
